The Custis-Lee Family Papers range from 1806-1857 and include correspondence, literary productions, bills, and receipts of George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857), correspondence to his wife Mary Lee (Fitzhugh) Custis (1788-1853), to his daughter Mary Anna Randolph (Custis) Lee (1808-1873), and of his son-in-law Robert E. Lee (1807-1870). George Washington Parke Custis was the brother of Martha (Custis) Peter (1777-1854). These documents entered the collection under the aegis of Martha (Williams) Carter (1827-1899), George Washington Parke Custis' great niece, who spent much time at Arlington House caring for him. |
