Scope & Content |
The bulk of the material in this collection is personal correspondence received by Anne Custis (Peter) Pearre from 1940 when she entered Bryn Mawr College, until her marriage in January 1953. The main correspondence is from her mother, Caroline (Ogden-Jones) Peter. Other correspondents include her father, Armistead Peter 3rd; grandparents Suzanne (Earle) Ogden-Jones Emmons Bartlett, Armistead Peter, Jr., and Anna (Williams) Peter; and several contemporaries. The correspondence includes details of the daily lives of the Peter family and information about the operation of their farm in Cambridge, New York. There is also some information about the furnishings of Tudor Place. The letters written during World War II by Armistead Peter 3rd, who served in the United States Navy, reveal feelings on some of the major historical events of that era. Many of Anne Custis (Peter) Pearre's contemporaries represented in the collection were either in the military service or employed in war-time occupations, and their letters offer additional insights for the study of World War II. The collection largely concerns education and social events. Education materials exist from Anne Custis (Peter) Pearre's entrance into first grade in 1928 through her graduation from Bryn Mawr College in 1944. Most of the major manuscripts are college research papers, but there are also essays on summer vacations, career goals, and personal interests from her early years. Under the subject of social events are invitation lists for various special events in her life including birthday parties, a 1941 debut, a 1944 graduation party, and her 1953 wedding. The financial documents include a series on bank statements and checks, stock reports, and bills and receipts 1940 through January 1953. The scrapbook materials include her childhood drawings from 1927 through the late 1940s, pencil and crayon drawings, and watercolor sketches primarily of animals and natural scenery. Scrapbook and printed materials date throughout the collection, including holiday concert and theatre programs, pamphlets, certificates, news magazines, and college alumni bulletins from the late 1940s. |
