Scope & Content |
The Armistead Peter, Jr., Papers include correspondence, subject files, diaries, note files, legal documents, financial documents, scrapbook material, and printed material. These papers constitute the most complete record of life at Tudor Place: they include detailed notes, journal entries, and financial documents covering the entire period Armistead Peter, Jr., lived at Tudor Place 1911-1960, and his research into the history of Tudor Place and the Peter family. He kept diaries from 1890 to 1957. The management of Tudor Place and research into family history were the main occupations of Armistead Peter, Jr. His personal correspondence 1888-1960 is formal, consisting of invitations, thank you notes, condolences, and letters requesting genealogical information. The most extensive personal correspondence is with Caroline (Ogden-Jones) Peter, his daughter-in-law, concerning household arrangements at Tudor Place, and with his son, Armistead Peter 3rd, about the management and maintenance of Tudor Place. Both of these series cover a forty-year period. The business correspondence 1893-1959 includes the management of Tudor Place and a farm in Cambridge, New York. He served on the Board of Directors of the Eighth and Ninth Avenue Railroad Company in New York from 1896 to 1918, although his role in the running of the company was minor. The financial documents are particularly complete, as Armistead Peter, Jr., kept ledgers of all expenses for extended periods, as well as checkbooks and bills and receipts. Subject files such as literary productions and scrapbook material relate to family history and local Georgetown and Washington, D.C., history and personalities. |
