Scope & Content |
The Anna (Williams) Peter Papers include personal correspondence and financial and legal documents. Almost all of the material ends in 1923 upon her separation from Armistead Peter, Jr.; this collection provides little information beyond that date regarding financial or personal obligations. The bulk of the papers consists of personal correspondence written from friends and family, and discusses day to day activities and social engagements. There are concentrations of correspondence from relatives including her mother Sarah (Law) Williams, her uncle George Augustine Haines, Britannia (Peter) Kennon, Armistead Peter, Jr., and her son Armistead Peter 3rd, ranging from 1894 to 1923. Additional correspondence includes letters of condolence upon the death of her mother, Sarah (Law) Williams, and her aunt, Anna (Law) Wright. The business correspondence in the collection deals with Anna (Williams) Peter's charitable activities. Included are incoming letters of gratitude and receipts for the money she donated, as well as a few outgoing letters. Among her charities are the Altar Society of the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City, St. Luke's Church in Cambridge, New York, and the American Red Cross. The financial documents include receipts of personal and household purchases from 1918 to 1923, and receipts from the renovation of Content Farm, Cambridge, New York, from 1920 to 1923. One subject file on the Colonial Dames of America provides information on local members of the society, as well as the rules and by-laws, including a copy of the constitution of the society and the Acts in Council. The few legal documents in this collection deal primarily with fire insurance for Anna (Williams) Peter's houses. There is a list of items Anna (Williams) Peter sold to her son Armistead Peter 3rd in 1939. Material found in her desk in 1923 is present, including newspaper clippings, her wedding invitation, her birth certificate, gift registers, address books, and travel postcards from around the world, |
